The board of OZA wishes to appoint new non-executive directors (NEDs) to serve on its board. The OZA board of directors provides leadership, governance and oversight to advance the organisation’s mission. Board members at OZA have an opportunity to lead an organisation that contributes to systemic change in South Africa, as well as being part of a network of change makers globally.

OZA’s vision is a just, democratic, and sustainable world where power and resources are shared, and poverty and inequality are no more. OZA is a South Africa-based affiliate of Oxfam International (OI), a global network of 20 inter-dependent organisations who work together in more than 90 countries.   We invite suitably qualified individuals to apply for the positions of NEDs to join OZA’s governance board.

Location: South Africa

Criteria

OZA is committed to effective governance, and to a board of directors which has the appropriate balance of knowledge, skills, experience, diversity and independence to enable it to appropriately discharge its governance roles and responsibility.

We invite individuals with experience in one or more of the following skills and experience:

  • A minimum of 6 years of experience in governance, preferably of non-profit public and private sector entities and a deep commitment to social justice
  • A Gender Justice and Feminist lens into the issues OZA exists to address
  • Strategic communications and/or public relations
  • Financial management and audit experience
  • Risk Management
  • Change Management experience
  • Fundraising expertise, experience, and networks
  • Innovation and Digital Transformation expertise

Oxfam South Africa is committed to diversity, inclusion and transformation and strives to reflect South Africa’s racial, cultural, ethnic, sex and gender diversities. Black, Women, LGBTIAQ candidates with requisite experience, as well as suitably qualified candidates younger than 40 years, are encouraged to apply for these Board positions.

Candidates must have a clear understanding of the fiduciary duties of NEDs, and demonstrate the following personal characteristics:

Integrity: Have experience in a position of trust requiring him or her to act in good faith, avoid conflicts of interest, and display the highest standards of honesty and integrity within and outside the organisation.

Independence: Be able to exercise judgment independently of any stakeholder outside of OZA.
Competence: The nominated directors must have obtained a degree or equivalent qualification and have demonstrable practical knowledge and experience relevant to the role.

Remuneration:

NEDs at OZA are volunteers. The organisation covers reasonable and agreed expenses for travel and related expenses for board meetings. The position will also entail a comprehensive induction that includes training in best practices of non-profit organisation governance, as required.
