Job Suummary:
WWF-SA is looking for a Science Based Targets: Research and Target Analyst to champion science-based target-setting by businesses as a powerful way to catalyse decarbonisation of the global economy. It is a WWF joint initiative with CDP, the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), and the World Resources Institute (WRI).
WWF Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) Goal: Science-based GHG emission reduction target setting will become standard business practice and corporations will be contributing to close the emissions gap left by country commitments.
Internationally
As one of its core activities, the SBTi works with private companies to encourage the adoption of science-based corporate emission reduction targets and assess their conformance to a set of specific criteria.
Main functions for this position include:
•Review of company targets against the SBTi eligibility criteria, in adherence with the Target Validation Protocol.
•Produce clear and concise target evaluation reports using the Science Based Targets initiative template.
•Contribute to SBTi target-setting and validation resources developed by the SBTi.
•Contribute to strategic research activities of the SBTi Technical Working Group.
•Develop technical knowledge products for the SBTi.
•Close coordination with the WWF SBT team and the SBTi staff.
Globally – (80% of time)
Under the responsibility of the Technical Manager of Science-Based Targets at WWF South Africa and the Global Lead – Science-Based Targets at the WWF network level, the SBT Research, and Target Analyst will play a critical role in the WWF SBTi international program by:
•Conducting in-depth assessments of corporate emission reduction targets against the framework of the SBTi.
•Developing clear and concise target validation reports as outputs for companies participating in the SBTi.
•Supporting the continued development of the SBTi’s technical tools and guidance documents, including sectoral methodologies.
•Supporting the development of thought leadership on corporate greenhouse gas accounting, management, and target-setting.
•Constructively contributing to the work and vision of the WWF SBT team as well as the SBTi core team.
•Other technical and administrative responsibilities, as required.
Locally – South Africa
This position also entails 20% of time dedicated to working in the Climate Change team in the Environmental Programmes team in WWF South Africa to serve as a contact point for South African companies seeking to engage in the SBTi.
South Africa (20% of time)
This position also entails 20% of time dedicated to working in the Environmental Programmes team in WWF South Africa primarily on the following tasks.
•Serve as a first contact point for companies approaching WWF South Africa for advice on setting science-based targets
•Serve as relationship manager for South African companies engaging with the SBTi
•Represent WWF South Africa, when required, in public events on Science Based Targets
•Support the work of the Policies and Future Unit as required from time to time
Requirements
•Degree in climate science, environmental science, engineering, economics, business administration or a related field is required. Master’s degree is preferred.
•The candidate should have a minimum of 2 years of relevant professional experience.
•Strong technical background, with experience in climate science and corporate GHG accounting highly desirable; experience in LCA analysis an asset
•Excellent and demonstrable technical, research, and analytical skills.
•Strong writing and presentation skills.
•Ability to convey complex environmental and technical issues concisely to diverse audiences.
•Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
•Capacity to be assertive and take initiative when appropriate
•Ability to work flexible work hours due to the international nature of the work.
•A willingness to travel widely and frequently, locally in South Africa and internationally.
•Strong track record and network
