Funza Lushaka Teaching Bursary Application 2025/2026

Funza Lushaka Teaching Bursary is currently looking to fund undergraduates looking for scholarships.

Bursary Details

Online Applications for the Funza Lushaka Bursary for the 2023 academic year will open on Saturday 1 October.  In terms of what the bursary offers, it covers tuition fees, accommodation, meals, books and learning materials, as well as an allowance for monthly living expenses where possible. All first time applicants must be 30 years or younger to apply for Funza Lushaka Bursary. The Funza Lushaka Bursary Programme is a multi-year programme to promote teaching as a profession.

Bursaries are available to enable selected students to complete a teaching qualification in identified areas of priority. Recipients of these bursaries will be required to teach at a public school for the same number of years that they received the bursary.

Distance education and part-time students are eligible for a bursary provided they are eligible in all other respects.

Candidate Requirements

Who is eligible to apply?

Any academically gifted, young –

  • learners, currently in Grade 12;
  • graduates who want to complete a teaching qualification (enrol for a PGCE);
  • people who want to make a career change and become teachers; and
  • unemployed people who want to become teachers.

Prospective bursars must first gain admission at a higher education institution (HEI). The Financial Aid Office and/or the Faculty/School of Education at the HEI will have information on how to apply for the bursary.

Selection Criteria

In order to qualify for the bursary, prospective applicants must meet the requirements listed below:

  1. Be an academically exceptional student aged 30 years and below.
  2. Have an exemption or admission to a bachelor’s degree
  3. Have at least level 4 pass at matric level in the subject which leads on to the priority area/subject in which the applicant will specialise to teach
  4. For Foundation Phase specialisation, a pass in Mathematics or a level 4 in Mathematical Literacy at the Grade 12 level is required. Additionally, a level 4 pass in the Home Language is also required
  5. Students who wish to specialise in the teaching of Technology subjects, including CAT, and who do not have these subjects at matric level, must have at least a level 4 pass in Mathematics.
  6. Have an academic record with two Technical Subjects/modules studied up to second-year level showing a full completion of the qualification.

What programmes will be funded?

  • Bachelor of Education (BEd)
  • Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE)

  • Applications for the Funza Lushaka bursary for 2022 will open on 01/10/2021
  • Please note that there are a limited number of new bursaries available for 2022
  • New applicants are advised to also pursue other funding opportunities such as NSFAS
  • The outcome of the selection process will be available from the University not later than 30/04/2022
  • The bursary targets students who are younger than 30 years of age

CLOSING DATES

  • New applications close on 07/01/2022 and
  • Re-applications for Existing/Returning Bursars close on 19/11/2021

How to Apply for Funza Lushaka Teaching Bursary

  1. Open the e-Gov portal at www.eservices.gov.za or www.funzalushaka.doe.gov.za
  2. Register by providing personal information
  3. Login to the system using user name and password created when registering
  4. On the e-Services Menu select Funza Lushaka Bursary Scheme
  5. Enter the OTP received on the preferred channel
  6. Accept the Terms and Conditions
  7. On the dashboard menu click on the 2021 application button
  8. Follow the steps to complete the required field with your information
  9. Accept the declaration to confirm the information captured
