Grade One And Eight Placements For 2023 Can Be Appealed, The Gauteng Department of Education has received over 764,000 applications for the 2023 academic year, for grades one and eight. This means, some learners will not be placed at their preferred schools.
Gauteng Education MEC, Panyaza Lesufi, has encouraged parents and guardians to submit an appeal if they are unhappy about the status of their child’s placement for grades one and eight.
The MEC briefed the media at Hoërskool Menlopark in Pretoria, outlining the plan for the 2023 academic year online application process.
Parents anxiously had to wait to receive an SMS confirming (or denying) their child’s placement, which was officially sent out on 3 October, 2022. Parents can expect to receive SMSes until the 30th of November.
The province’s online admission system for new applicants opened on 22 July and saw a successful day unfold, despite an unforeseen technical challenge.
Because of such a large number of applications, Lesufi told parents not to panic if an SMS had yet not come through.
“We want parents to know that the offer we gave you, is the offer you’ll get, and if you have not received an SMS, you can go on our website. Our website will indicate whether you receive the SMS or not,” said Lesufi.
Lesufi also said that if parents and/or guardians are unhappy about the status of their child’s placements, they can appeal the decision on the online registration website, which has an objection and appeal process.
“With the online registration, the parent has the right to appeal; so you can object if you have placed your child at a school you don’t want, but remember, we didn’t thumb-suck the school, you applied for that school.
If we say we can’t accommodate your child, you can then appeal to the HOD; if you are not happy with the HOD, you can appeal to me and say ‘I don’t take your reasons why you didn’t take my child. We will be in a position to review your appeal,” explained Lesufi.
If parents require any assistance, they are encouraged to make use of the Department’s toll-free number (0800 000 789) or visit its district offices.
