In delivering ‘social science that makes a difference’, the Research Programmes of the Human Sciences Research Council initiate and undertake policy-oriented research projects and programmes from its offices in Cape Town, Durban, Pietermaritzburg and Pretoria. Its public-purpose mandate is set out in the Human Sciences Research Council Act of 2008.
The Human and Social Capabilities research programme within the HSRC employs a multi-disciplinary group of social scientists and public health specialists who conduct numerous empirical and policy-related studies each year, three-quarters of which are donor-funded. The Human and Social Capabilities division conducts transdisciplinary, intersectional, policy and programme-relevant research to improve health, well-being and promote a socially just and cohesive society.
The Human Social Capabilities Division of the HSRC seeks to award one Masters Full Time bursary as part of the NRF BRICS MULTILATERAL JOINT SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY RESEARCH COLLABORATION funded project Characterizing Risk Indicators to cause Anemia Prevalence among young Children and Adolescents in BRICS countries (India, SA, Russia) using Machine Learning Approach and Agent-Based Modelling
The candidate will preferably be registered in a Western Cape or KwaZulu Natal based university. But applicants from other areas will also be considered.

Job Summary:
The candidate is encouraged to conceptualise their studies around this broad research area, and participate in the research project in a mutually beneficial agreement with the project leader.
The ideal applicant will be a South African citizen or permanent resident and the bursary will be awarded on a year – year basis depending on the availability of funds.

The Bursar will be registered and based at their university during the tenure of the Bursary.
Applications NOT eligible
•The Bursary may not hold any bursaries, awards, assistantships concurrently with the NRF bursary, which bind him/her to enter the service of any organisation upon completion of his/her studies. The Bursary may also not be held concurrently with any other NRF or South African Government funded bursary scheme or organisations like the CSIR, MRC, etc.
•Students who already hold NRF bursaries or who hold any other South African government funded scholarship.
•The Bursar registered on a full-time basis for the degree, may not hold full-time salaried employment during the tenure of the scholarship, but he/she will be allowed to undertake teaching, tutorials, assistance or demonstration duties and be remunerated for his/her services at the normal university tariff for services rendered.
•Fulltime employees or individuals on sabbatical will not be considered.
•Foreign nationals, employed Full-time who have been awarded leave/sabbatical for the period of study and who receive a bursary from their employers do not qualify for full-time bursaries.
Requirements:
•Have completed or graduated with an Honours degree and be registered for a Master’s degree in the Social Sciences /Public Health or a relevant field at a public higher education institution in South Africa; with a special interest in Nutrition
•Be curious and enthusiastic about a research career that includes qualitative and quantitative data analysis;
•Have good interpersonal skills and sound communication skills (verbal as well as report writing);
•Have a sound grounding in research methods, qualitative or quantitative and growing conceptual ability;
•Be willing to participate in the broader research project as and when necessary, including an interest in participating in data collection and analysis as well as contributing to research outputs (e.g. reports, journal articles, chapters in books).
