In delivering ‘social science that makes a difference’, the Research Programmes of the Human Sciences Research Council initiate and undertake policy-oriented research projects and programmes from its offices in Cape Town, Durban, Pietermaritzburg and Pretoria. Its public-purpose mandate is set out in the Human Sciences Research Council Act of 2008.

The Finance department delivers a total financial service to the HSRC. This entails debtors, creditors and cash management and ensuring that the HSRC complies with relevant legislation and accounting principles.

The successful incumbent will report to the Projects Office Accounting Supervisor in the Finance Department

Job Summary:
Key Responsibilities:
•Oversee projects’ contracts budget and spending;
•Analyse and oversee revenue recognition on projects within the HSRC +/- 300 Research Projects per year;
•Liaise with Research Programmes within the HSRC to ensure that all project activities are performed timely and in line with contractual milestones and funders’ expectations;
•Perform all system activities in ACCPAC that relate to daily, monthly and year-end activities;
•Review and assist with budget preparation, , capturing budget corrections, and approval of budgets ;
•Assist with the preparation of financial reports to funders in line with requirements and reporting templates set out in funder agreements;
•Assist with the preparation of US funding financial reports in line with requirements and reporting templates set out in funder agreements i.e. USAID,CDC etc.
•Assist in the preparation of year end audits, projects audits and internal audits and US funding audits i.e. USAID,CDC, USA Universities etc.;
•Responsible for preparation of monthly management accounts;
•Assist in preparation of AFS and related audit files and notes;
•Assist in any other assigned related activities;

Requirements:
Key Requirements:
•A post matric academic qualification in Accounting, e.g. B Com Degree with Honours – major in management accounting/ and should have served Accounting Articles;
•Proficient in the application of Generally Recognised Accounting Principles (GRAP), VAT legislation, income tax legislation and the Public Finance Management Act (PFMA); International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS);
•Strong experience in US federal funding which includes CDC,USAID and reporting, annual audits thereof;
•A strong commitment to proactive service delivery and responsive to internal clients’ needs;
•Strong interpersonal skills to engage internal clients, external stakeholders and colleagues at all levels in the organization;
•Flexibility to operate as a member of a team, share knowledge and assist colleagues where possible;
•Customer centric skills;
•Knowledge of Supply Chain Management will be an added advantage;
•High level of proficiency in computer skills (advanced Microsoft excel knowledge is required);
•The ability to work well under pressure and to meet deadlines
•To be available to commence work 1st January 2022.
