Matric Rewrite October/November 2023

Matric Rewrite October/November 2023 is available for those who are rewriting their final school exams. Following the closing of the registration for exam rewrite, the Department of Basic Education (DBE), Many learners who registered to rewrite their National Senior Certificate (NSC) exams in 2023 will now begin preparing for the critical examinations.

It is expedient for learners to know when to write an exam while preparing for the 2023 October/November NSC exams. Therefore the department, DBE has released the official 2023 matric exam timetable to assist learners in preparing for their examinations.

Senior Certificate (SC) matric candidates will not rewrite their examinations during the May/June 2024 matric exams rather than on the October/November 2023 exam sessions. Registration for the 2024 May/June exams opens on 2 October 2023 and closes on 9 February 2024.

SC candidates can register for the May/June 2024 matric exams online or in person at a provincial education district office or at an examination centre they previously used.

Matric Rewrite October/November 2023 Start Date

The rewrite is in accordance to the matric timetable, meaning that Learners will write the same exams with those who are writing for the first time.

National Senior Certificate (NSC) exams begin Monday, 30 October 2023. The NSC exams are expected to end on the first week of December 2023.

In addition, since it, is only the examination of subjects you registered that will be rewritten, please confirm the dates for those subjects

What the Different Matric Passes Mean

Bachelor’s Pass

To secure a bachelor’s pass, students must meet the following criteria:

  • Obtain a minimum of 50% in five specified subjects, including Life Orientation.
  • Attain above 30% in two additional subjects.
  • A learner may fail one subject and still achieve a bachelor’s pass

Diploma Pass

A diploma pass requires a learner to :

  • Achieve a minimum of 40% in five designated subjects, which includes Life Orientation.
  • Attain at least 30% in two more subjects.
  • A learner may fail one subject

Higher Certificate Pass

To obtain a higher certificate pass, the learner must

  • Achieve a minimum of 40% in their Home Language.
  • Achieve 40% in at least two subjects and 30% in three additional subjects.
  • A learner may fail one subject

Failure

A learner who fails two or more subjects will not obtain an NSC. Learners who fail their NSC exams can apply to have their scripts remarked or rechecked.

The Second Chance Matric Programme allows learners to rewrite their matric exams, either by reattempting the entire year or by focusing on the subjects that were not successfully passed. The DBE provides numerous resources to learners who register for the second chance matric programme.
