Teacher Assistant Applications 2022, As part of the fourth phase of the Presidential Youth Employment Initiative in the Basic Education Sector the Western Cape Education Department is currently recruiting over 20 000 Education Assistants for public and special schools.
In the past three phases of the Presidential Youth Employment Initiative (PYEI) in the Basic Education sector, schools have responded very positively to the recruitment of Education and General School Assistants.
The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) is currently underway with the recruitment of these school assistants for the fourth phase of the initiative. In this phase only new applicants who have not participated in previous phases will be considered for the assistant positions.
The WCED plans to recruit 20 500 Education Assistants and General School assistants for public and special schools in the province.
The Education Assistants help teachers with administrative tasks, classroom management, sport coaching and cultural activities. The General Assistants help with maintenance, cleaning, vegetable gardens, and general administration around the school.
These assistants receive a monthly stipend of R4 081.44 per month less 1% UIF contribution and their contracts will run from 1 February 2023 until 30 September 2023.
Applications opened on 26 September 2022 and will close on 16 October 2022.
Unemployed youth between the ages of 18 and 34 years old are encouraged to apply for Education and General Assistants positions at a public school which is within a 5km radius from where they live.
Previous assistants have expressed how grateful they were for the opportunity as some are now interested in or pursuing a career in education as a result of the initiative.
In order to qualify for Phase four of the PYEI applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Youths between the ages of 18 and 34 years old when they apply
- Youth must live within a 5 km radius of the school (or 30 km radius if it is a small, micro or farm school)
- Education Assistant (EA) must have a Matric qualification
- General School Assistants (GSA) do not need a Matric qualification

The Department of Basic Education aims to create employment in the education sector through the PYEI in order to alleviate the high levels of youth unemployment in the country.
