Job Title: National Biodiversity and Business Network (NBBN) Manager
Location: EWT Conservation Campus in Midrand, South Africa.

Purpose of the Position The Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT) is one of the largest biodiversity conservation NGOs in southern Africa and is seeking to employ a National Biodiversity and Business Network (NBBN) Manager. The Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT) launched the NBBN in 2013 to facilitate a reduction in the impact of business on biodiversity in South Africa by driving broad business action in the area of biodiversity mainstreaming. The NBBN facilitates the integration of biodiversity into business strategies and operations within various sectors, industries and through related stakeholders.

It is an open and inclusive network designed to help raise awareness of biodiversity and sustainability issues within the business community and to encourage dialogue amongst stakeholders, as well as to provide pragmatic and practical support to facilitate the mainstreaming process. In the past 2 years, a key focus of the NBBN has been developing the Biological Diversity Protocol, a biodiversity accounting framework for business that assists businesses to aggregate data from various sites across a company’s value or supply chain and to measure impacts on biodiversity in a standardized way. The NBBN is now poised to oversee the roll-out of this tool and to drive improved performance in South African businesses through the application of this tool and the development of strategic partnerships to reduce biodiversity loss.

The EWT is looking for a dynamic, passionate and confident person to lead the strategic development and management of the day-to-day activities of the NBBN. This person will be responsible for the strategic direction, operational management and project development within the NBBN. This includes updating the existing stagey, promoting and developing the EWT’s Biodiversity Disclosure Project offerings presenting at events, developing and implementing projects with partners and stakeholders, and fundraising for the NBBN. The successful candidate should embody the EWT’s values of passion, integrity and innovation.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the strategic development of the NBBN through the design and implementation of a five-year strategy of the NBBN.
  • Build on existing EWT relationships with business to improve their biodiversity impact disclosure and improve their ratings.
  • Promote and develop EWT’s Biodiversity Disclosure Project toolkit, notably the Biological Diversity Protocol and undertake annual biodiversity performance assessments of listed companies.
  • Work with existing and new NBBN members on a long-term strategy to use the BDP toolkit to drive down business biodiversity impacts.
  • Develop effective strategic partnerships and/or relationships with international and national organizations, companies and government around business and biodiversity.
  • Ensure the sustainable growth of the NBBN.
  • Design and Implement the NBBN communications plan.
  • Provide strategic guidance to the EWT on matters relating to biodiversity and business.
  • Present on biodiversity and business at relevant forums.
  • Develop and manage the NBBN budget in line with the EWT’s policies and procedures.
  • Drive the EWT’s activities around the development of the Green Economy and green business development.

Minimum Qualifications, experience and competencies required:

  • A degree in a relevant field such as natural sciences, business management, environmental management or economics.
  • Proven working experience in the private sector with at least 5 years of experience working with business and environmental management or sustainability.
  • A strong network in the business sector of relevant stakeholders.
  • A solid reputation and track record among business and government.
  • Demonstrated experience managing projects of relevance to business and biodiversity.
  • High level of knowledge about issues related to biodiversity and business.
  • Demonstrated fundraising, budgeting and programme planning abilities.
  • Experience with results-based portfolio and project cycle management, monitoring and evaluation methodologies and principles.
  • Strategic and innovative thinker.
  • Ability to build new and develop existing relationships with stakeholders at all levels.
  • Strong interpersonal and management skills and experience.
  • Excellent communication skills and excellence in written and spoken English is essential.
  • Leadership skills.
  • Must be able to work independently.
  • Demonstrated experience in facilitating the establishment of networks and multi-stakeholder participatory processes, is beneficial.
  • Training and facilitation experience.
  • Computer literacy in relation to Office applications (word processing, spreadsheets, PowerPoint) as well as the use of internet and online communication tools.

Interpersonal skills:

  • Disciplined, self-motivated, innovative and energetic.
  •  Fluent in English.
  •  The ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Excellent communication and people skills and an approachable personality.
  • Good business acumen
