What’s Causing The Delay Of R350 Grant Appeal Payments?

What’s Causing The Delay Of R350 Grant Appeal Payments?, A high number of South Africans and lobby groups have been expressing their frustration with delayed Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant payments. The government agency responsible for paying out the grant, claims a number of factors have caused these delays.

Initially, the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) had committed to administering the amount of R350 for the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) for six  months, as the pandemic progressed, a lot had to be changed as the country still has millions of people who are still without employment.

Pressure from lobby groups and the unemployment statistics led to the threshold regulations being changed. Sassa General Manager Brenton van Vrede has explained that everytime threshold regulations are amended, all financial banks have to also update their algorithms, so that they will be able to assess SRD grant applicants.

While the government agency has confirmed to have people just under a million or so have approved for the grant, they might have made a slight  mistake or some changes to their details which would then lead to grant payments being delayed.

In an interview, Vrede has also explained:

People have provided Sassa with the incorrect bank account details and some changing them, which has then resulted in payment failures.

According to Sassa, some of the individuals who have been experiencing the delays, also include those whose bank accounts are pending verification from the National Treasury.

This comes at a time when Sassa is faced with the dilemma of backlogs due to changed regulations and the fact that some applicants had to also appeal, with the issue of bank account details being a contributing factor in delays.

Sassa has urged applicants of the grant to meet the government agency halfway by being more diligent when they put their bank account details into the application system, so that payments can be made.

In the meantime, Vrede has confirmed that Sassa is working around the clock to help solve the issue of backlogs, so that payments will be made on time.

Applicants have also been advised to update their personal information on the SRD website should they at any point change their details. Doing this will guarantee that the funds are accessed by the rightful grant beneficiary and to ensure that funds are easily accessed without any inconvenience.
