Wilderness Safaris Botswana is part of a multi-national safari operator (Wilderness Safaris), which operates permanent safari camps throughout Northern Botswana. In line with Wilderness Safaris’ core beliefs in environmental stewardship the Conservation Ecologist will carry out development, maintenance and implementation of a Long-term Monitoring Programme throughout all Wilderness Safaris Botswana’s concession areas including preparation and dissemination of regular reports both internally and externally. They will coordinate and oversee recording of all sightings and wildlife monitoring data with and by guides as well as entering the data onto an online system for use in report writing for internal use as well as submission of annual reports.

Job Summary::
•On-going design, development and implementation of a Long-term Monitoring Programme throughout all Wilderness Safaris Botswana’s (WSB) concession areas.
•Consolidate Ecological Data and Compile Reports
•Preparation and Submission of Annual Wildlife Monitoring Reports per camp
•Carry out Bi-Annual Assessments on environmental performance of each camp
•Coordinate Research Project support and logistics
•Maintenance of Environmental Department equipment and vehicles
•Effective communication and distribution of environmental information
•Supervision, management and capacity building of personnel involved with Environmental Monitoring (Environmentalists and guides) in the field.
•Financial management and proposal writing, fundraising, and publicity
•Building and sustaining partnerships with other environmental organisations and governmental departments
•Support ground operations as and where necessary, beyond ecology role as and when required.
•Assistance of ecosystem maintenance, as and when required within concessions inter alia, controlled burning, anti-poaching, road maintenance & creation thereof of a diverse network and other related functions required.
•Environmental talks for Maun office staff and guests in camp, as and when requested/ required
Requirements:
QUALIFICATIONS:
•A Master’s Degree qualifications on Environmental subjects with a minimum of 2 years’ experience working within the research/environmental monitoring field OR BSc Honours in Environmental Subject with more than 5 experience in environmental monitoring field and Scientific report writing
•Experience in the development and management of large-scale, environmental monitoring programmes.
•The ability to manage, communicate and train people in a cross-cultural setting
•Excellent English writing and speaking skills (Setswana preferred but not required)
•The ability to work independently, as well as part of a team. Essential to act proactively in an environment with supervision and instruction guided by the company Environmental policies and management.
•The willingness to travel constantly in remote areas
